Simon Kin-Cheong Chan is consultant, director of pain medicine and honorary associate professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prince of Wales Hospital. He is also supervisor of training in anaesthesiology for the Hospital Authority’s New Territories East Cluster.

Dr Chan earned his MBBS degree from the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, in 1988, before undergoing specialty training in anaesthesia, first at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney, and then at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong. He has diplomas in pain management and clinical acupuncture, and was awarded his master’s degree in health service management by the University of New South Wales in 2006. He is a fellow of the Australia and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists and the Hong Kong College of Medicine.

Dr Chan has served the Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists as council member since 2004 and is currently its honorary secretary. His interests included cardiac anaesthesia, pain management in cancer patients and lower back pain.
